Crysis 3 - Next Gen or what?
Crysis 3 is a game developed by Crytek and published by Electronic Arts or EA for short.
Crytek is arguably well known for its Crysis series than FarCry. Today we'll be talking about why and how this game particularly has gained it's recognition.
As the final game to the trilogy, Crysis 3 was released worldwide on 19 February, 2013 and 21 February, 2013 in the US and UK respectively. Crytek teased that the series would have a 'radical future' leading the fans to believe that there might be yet another sequel.
The game follows with our main lead Prophet after he has been unexpectedly caught by CELL, the evil corporation trying to dominate the world. During his capture he sees visions of the near future where CELL has, in fact, taken over the world but a bigger evil looms over the world, the Alpha-Ceph, as it approaches the planet to bring about its annihilation.
We start our journey at a harbour near New York where Prophet has been rescued by Psycho and his team. And this time Psycho no longer has his nanosuit and Prophet is the only person left with a nanosuit having the potential of saving the earth from the Alpha-Ceph.
I'll leave the story at that as now we will be discussing about the various elements that make this game what it is. You can play it yourself if you will to find out how this story plays out.
As you know by now that Crysis 3 is a first-person shooter or fps game developed using the CryEngine 3, an in-house game engine developed by Crytek, and this game probably used every aspect of the engine in developing it. The game is famous for bringing even the most high-end of the high-end PCs of its time 'down to their knees'. You're lucky if you get a stable average 60 fps on 4k resolution at max settings even on a GTX 980. It goes without saying that this game is extremely GPU intensive.
Even now, 4 years after its launch, Crysis 3 is still popularly used to benchmark new custom PC builds.
The campaign is quite enjoyable with each level keeping you at your toes. Not to mention that it has, as I see it, a mix of two main genres, namely, sci-fi and realism, fighting against CELL's soldiers and then the alien Ceph, depicting the affect of battle and the realistic gameplay.
With the nanosuit we have three modes for battle available to us, Cloak mode which gives you the ability to become invisible and strike enemies in a stealthy fashion, Agility mode which allows Prophet to run faster as well as jump higher, and strength mode which increases the player's attack damage by tenfolds. These modes however can be used for limited periods of time as they require energy from the nanosuit which is refilled after all modes have been turned off, as seen in the HUD.
The nanosuit also has two features integrated into it's visor which also allows you to identify the threat level. The visor allows you to pinpoint your enemies' location and useful stuff(weapons, ammo and intel), and has Nano-vision which enables you to see the heat signatures of your opponents in your surroundings and it can be used in the dark.
The game introduces a new weapon, the compound bow, which allow us to fire projectiles even in cloak mode with the option of using fire, electric and normal projectiles. The HUD is beautifully set being in the translucent way it is and moving with the visor. In addition to motion blur it looks just fantastic. Have I mentioned that you can upgrade your nanosuit with nanosuit modules you find lying around? No wonder they called it a AAA title.
It may seem that the abilities are endless; it even has a hacking mode with which you have an interface with turrets, security locks and locked crates and hack into them.
The varieties of weapons you can find on the go are endless and you can even customise them with silencers, ADSs, Iron sights, different ammo, etc. Heck, you have a whole UI for it.
Don't get me started on the surroundings and it's texture. Its completely captivating even on medium settings. Remember that I've mentioned realism, well I have to say the grassfields, terrain, skies, etc they just look really picturesque. The motion blur just adds to its beauty.
My only gripe being that the gameplay as it may be is sometimes too repetitive and I might be contradicting myself but the characters have this plasticky touch to them with some facial features being dull looking.
But I have to give it to CryTek for making such a great game, that too developed in 2012. Take this review with a pinch of salt and check it out for yourself. And with that review I'll give Crysis 3 a solid 9/10 making it a a must-have game even in 2017.
